Google Discover, What it is and how it boosts your traffic with search engine recommendations

Google Discover (GD) offers a new way of discovering contents through Google’s homepage in mobile format and its original app for Android

With its arrival, which coincided with the twentieth birthday of Google, it was gifted with not just a much current Google Feed, but also with very useful new features for users.

According to the great Mountain View, Google Discover consists of a list of topics by which users can scroll on their smartphones.

It shows summary pages on cards, that redirects them to the source page of the corresponding GD entry when users touch them.

And this can bring in massive amounts of direct traffic.

Not bad to combine with your web positioning strategy, right?

Types of recommended content

The results offered by Google Discover include links, videos, entertainment news (such as film premieres), sports results, stock quotes and information about cultural events (such as nominees for an important prize or posters of music festivals) among many other things.

Google Discover cards are displayed based on the content they choose to follow and user interactions with Google products.

As expected, these cards are sorted based on an algorithm that attempts to determine the content quality, that is to say, the most interesting content for users.

In addition, GD does not only show newly published content, but also the older content if Google detects that it might be of interest to the user in question.

In conclusion, the position of the cards is based on the degree of coincidence that exists between the interests of a user and the content of an article or piece.

What should I do on my website to appear on Google Discover?

Nothing.

Google’s algorithms are the ones that decide what content to recommend, so you don’t have to do a special implementation on your website.

You will only have to publish relevant, current content with viral capacity.

Even so, Google offers different recommendations to make your content more likely to receive the push in Discover.

Great methods to gain visibility in Google Discover

Thus, to improve the positioning of your pages it is essential to publish valuable content for users.

Another tip to improve your position in Google Discover and the performance of your content is to use high quality images.

In fact, cards with large images improve the results of the publishers to the point of increasing 5% the percentage of clicks and 3% both the time spent and the degree of user satisfaction with the content.

If you’d like to boost your visibility in Google Discover by displaying large images in the search results, go for it!

Just do the following:

1. Use high quality large images that are at least 1200 px wide.

2. Make sure Google has the right to show your high quality images.

How to do this?

Either by using AMP, or if you prefer, by filling out this Google form

As you may have realised in our tests, they recommended us content with images 710 px wide. So, for now, you can save the heavier photos.

Additional tricks to appear on Google Discover

We extracted these ideas from our experiments.

Take note, they can be very useful. With them, you can:

  • Publish news content based on trends and current affairs.
  • Add the month and the year in the title.
  • Analyse last week’s most visited content and categories.
  • If it already recommended you, investigate the topic, focus and relevance.
  • Identify the most common searches within your website and publish more content about it.
  • Continuously visit your competitor’s websites and add them to your favourites (from the App and in Chrome).
  • Add topics from your industry in the apps settings to receive recommendations that inspire you.

For now, there is no definitive trick to conquer Google Discover, which is why constant testing is the only way to find a pattern.

Top Google Discover utilities for users

Google Discover main applications for users

From the user’s point of view, Google Discover can be a very useful tool if some of its features are maximised.

If you are interested in seeing your location’s weather information, you just have to go to the “Discover” section (GD’s Spanish name) and it will be the first thing you see.

This information appears on a small card, but if you wish, you can configure it by pressing the three-dot icon on the right of the card.

From the options that are displayed it is possible to hide the news you are seeing or not to show that information again.

If you prefer to permanently disable weather notifications, you can also do so by clicking on “customize”.

Customizing recommended content

Something truly useful for the user is to be able to tell Google Discover which content you prefer and which ones don’t interest you.

In addition, you can tell GD what specific news you don’t want to see, and even what sources do not interest you (even though they share contents regarding your interests.)

It is also possible not to stop receiving information on a subject, but to make it more or less frequent.

And of course, after cleaning all the information you have left in Google Discover, you can add your favorite themes. Within the “More” section is the “Customize Discover” option to “follow topics” of your interest.

Specifying content sources

It is also possible to manage the sources from which Google obtains information to consider what your interests are.

From the “sources” option under “More preferences” you can deactivate, for example, that GD read emails from Gmail to obtain information on invoices, flights, etc., or prevent you from accessing Calendar to know your reminders and events.

Another interesting feature of Google Discover is that it allows you to directly access Assistant to create events and reminders.

Besides from the assistant, it also has direct access to Google Lens to be able to search for images that you point to with the mobile camera.

Deactivate Google Discover

Finally, the user also has the possibility to entirely disconnect Discover within the application settings.

If you do, when you go to “Discover” on Google, you will only see the search bar and you will not get any information or suggestions.

In short, Google Discover is the feed reinvention of the searches giant, especially focused on today’s consumers (and tomorrow’s) par excellence, that is, millennials.

Hence the appearance of its search results evokes social networks (goodbye Google +) offering news, images and vertical videos, in addition to its traditional links.

Don’t you think it’s worth generating interesting content in exchange for visibility?

You probably do.

So, get going to reach more users with Google Discover.
